Overland Belt Conveyer
An Overland Belt Conveyor is a type of conveyor system designed specifically for transporting bulk materials over long distances. These conveyors are commonly used in industries such as mining, power generation, and aggregate processing, where large quantities of material need to be moved efficiently and continuously over varying terrains.
Wide Range Of Conveying Materials Conveyed
The conveying material can range from fine powders to large pieces of ore, stone, coal or pulp wood, as well as conveying fine sieves or small droplets of friable material. Due to the high corrosion resistance of rubber conveyor belts, maintenance costs are relatively low when transporting strongly corrosion resistance or abrasive materials. Overland belt conveyors can also transport alkaline and hot materials of a certain temperature and can also transport items in blocks.
Wide Range Of Conveying Capacity
The conveying capacity of overland belt conveyors can meet the required conveying tasks. There are light belt conveyors that can complete the conveying task with a small conveying capacity, and there are also large belt conveyors that can achieve the task of conveying thousands or even tens of thousands of tons per hour.
High Adaptability Of Conveyor Routes
Overland belt conveyor can adapt to terrain with slopes of 30% to 35%, whereas for truck transport, they can only adapt to pristine natural terrain with slopes of 6% to 8%. Conveyor system can be adapted to the terrain, bending in space and horizontally, reducing capital investment and avoiding the disturbance of factories or other populated areas by railways, roads, rivers and mountains. So it has a more flexible conveyor line and the length of the line can be extended as required.
Low Cost
Of all the tools used to transport bulk materials, overland belt conveyor systems for transporting bulk materials usually require lower man-hours and energy consumption per ton. Moreover,the maintenance personnel spend lest time,and the repair and replacement of smaller parts can be done quickly on site with low maintenance cost.
Flexible loading and unloading
The material can be received flexibly from one or more points according to the requirements of the process, and can also be unloaded to multiple points or sections.
KEY COMPONENTS OF OVERLAND BELT CONVEYOR SYSTEMS
Conveyor Belt
The heart of overland belt conveyor systems, the conveyor belt is the medium through which materials are transported across the system. It is typically made from layers of rubber, fabric, and steel cords to provide strength, durability, and flexibility.

Head Pulley
Positioned at the discharge end of the conveyor, the head pulley is powered by an electric motor, which drives the conveyor belt and moves the material along. The head pulley is often coated with a rubber lagging to increase friction and improve belt traction.

Tail Pulley
Located at the loading end, the tail pulley serves as the turnaround point for the conveyor belt. It can also be adjusted to maintain the proper tension in the belt, ensuring smooth operation.

Idler Rollers
These support the conveyor belt along its length, providing a smooth surface for the belt to ride on. Idler rollers are strategically placed to support the weight of the belt and the material being transported, preventing sagging and ensuring efficient movement.

Conveyor Frame
The structure that supports all the components of the conveyor, including the belt, pulleys, and idlers. The conveyor frame is designed to be sturdy and durable, capable of withstanding the weight and forces exerted by the moving belt and the materials it carries.

Comprising motors, gearboxes, and drive belts, the drive system provides the necessary power to the head pulley to move the conveyor belt and transport materials.

Belt Tensioning System
Essential for maintaining the correct tension in the conveyor belt, the belt tensioning system ensures efficient operation and prevents slippage or excessive wear. This can be achieved through weighted take-up units or screw take-up units.

Control System
Modern overland belt conveyor systems are equipped with sophisticated control systems that monitor and regulate the operation of the conveyor. These systems can adjust the speed of the belt, monitor the load, and even stop the conveyor in case of an emergency.

Conveying capacity is the amount of material that the conveyor can transport over a given period, usually measured in tons per hour (tph) or cubic meters per hour (m³/h). The capacity of an overland belt conveyor is influenced by several factors:
Belt Width
The width of the conveyor belt is one of the primary determinants of capacity. Wider belts can carry more material per unit of time. Typical belt widths range from 500 mm (20 inches) to 2,400 mm (94 inches) or more, depending on the application.
Belt Speed
There is a direct relationship between belt speed and capacity. Higher speeds increase the capacity, assuming the material is evenly distributed and the conveyor can handle the increased load.
Material Bulk Density
The bulk density of the material being transported affects the overall capacity. Heavier materials will have a higher capacity (in tons per hour) at the same belt speed and width compared to lighter materials.
Incline and Decline
The conveyor’s inclination affects capacity. When moving uphill, the effective capacity is reduced due to the additional energy required to lift the material. Conversely, when moving downhill, the conveyor might have an increased capacity, but careful control is needed to prevent overloading.
Load Profile
The load profile, or the cross-sectional area of the material on the belt, also impacts capacity. Engineers must design the conveyor to maximize the load profile while maintaining a stable and efficient operation.
